Leaving Office Depot

When you’re moving on from the company, here’s what happens to your benefits — and any action you may need to take.

Review the 2027 Benefits eGuide for complete plan details.

What You Can Take With You

  • Medical, Rx, Dental, Vision, and EAP end on the last day of the pay period in which you terminate/separate; however, you have the option to sign up for COBRA.

    ‍

‍LOA Direct Billing & COBRA automatically mails you a COBRA election kit. COBRA lets you and your dependents keep your current Medical, Rx, Dental, Vision, and EAP coverage for a limited time by paying the full premium yourself, plus an administrative fee — it’s there to bridge the gap while you line up new coverage. Questions? Call 866-365-2413.

  • Life & AD&D Insurance, Accident Insurance, Critical Illness, and Hospital Indemnity coverage ends on your termination/separation date. You have 31 days to port or convert it to an individual policy through Voya — do this promptly if you want to keep any coverage in place, since it won’t continue automatically. Contact Voya to request a conversion/portability application packet.

  • Health Care Flexible Spending Account (HCFSA) — Your access to unused HCFSA funds ends on your termination/separation date. You can still request reimbursement for eligible expenses incurred before your separation date — you just need to submit those claims by March 31 of the following year. Expenses incurred after your last day aren’t eligible for reimbursement.

    ‍

Exception: If you enroll in COBRA, you may continue the HCFSA through the remainder of the year in which you terminated employment.

  • Your Health Savings Account (HSA) goes with you — Unlike an HCFSA, your HSA is entirely yours — the funds (including anything Office Depot contributed) stay in your Inspira Financial account and remain usable tax-free for qualified expenses, no matter where you work next or even if you retire.

  • Your 401(k) is still yours — It stays invested exactly as you left it with Fidelity unless you actively request a distribution or roll it over to a new employer’s plan or an IRA.

  • Voluntary Benefits — Voluntary benefits such as Pet Insurance and Auto & Home Insurance are managed through direct payment to the carriers. You may be eligible to continue receiving group rates upon termination of employment. Contact the carriers directly for questions or further information.

  • Identity Theft Protection — The IDShield Identity Theft Protection plan ends on the last day of the pay period in which you terminate/separate. You have 30 days to contact IDShield if you would like to continue your coverage.

  • Legal Plan — The LegalEASE plan ends on the last day of the pay period in which you terminate/separate. You can continue your coverage after you leave. Contact LegalEASE to learn more.

  • Medicare Concierge — If you have utilized SmartConnect's Medicare Concierge prior to your termination/separation date, you will have access to their services even after your employment ends.

What Ends on Your Last Day

  • Disability — Your Disability coverage ends on your termination/separation date. If you are disabled at the time of your separation, your disability benefits may continue while you remain disabled. Questions? Call Voya for more information.

  • Coworker Partner Discounts — On your separation date, you will no longer have access to select discount programs such as:

    • Office Depot Office Max Coworker Merchandise Discount and Coworker Rewards Program
    • PerkSpot Discount Program
    • Chase Home Lending Benefit Program
  • Paid Time Off (PTO)

    • If your state follows a PTO Accrual Policy — Once eligible, all unused and accrued PTO hours are paid out.
    • If your state follows a PTO Front‑Load Policy — Unused PTO is not paid out at separation, except in the following states: IL, LA, ME, MA, NM, ND, and WY, or RI if you have been employed for more than one year. In these states, the company pays out accrued, unused PTO at your base rate unless otherwise required by law.‍‍
    • Position Eliminations, Staff Reductions, or Location Closings — PTO is pro‑rated based on your separation date. If you’ve already used more than your pro‑rated amount, no payout is provided. States listed above still receive full payout of any accrued, unused PTO.
